Resolution for 2016

Resolution for 2016 The only resolutions that work are lifestyle changes, and if you are really ready to do a lifestyle change, you dont wait for January 1. Which is one of the gazillion reasons why most New Years resolutions dont stick.   At New Years I used to do summaries of the most popular  posts from the year. I didnt like the posts that came up as most popular, so I started redefining the phrase most popular. Until I was just giving an end-of-year lists of posts I wanted you to read. And then I realized what was happening is that the posts I chose for everyone to go back and read were tending toward those where I wrote about  women and families (they had the most impact online). But I dont want to be known as a person who writes for women. Id really rather be known for my posts with good pictures  (because Id like to be known for having a life as charmed and gorgeous as The Pioneer Woman.) or posts with particularly good writing  (because someday there will be National Book Awards for bloggers, and I want one.) Resolutions work best if you pick just one. And the best  resolutions  are those you can write in a simple way. So for 2016 Im going to accept who I am:  Someone who struggles every day to accept the realities of parenting in the context of a world that celebrates people who give up everything for work. I am always trying to figure out how to get credit for being a stay-at-home parent and get credit for being a successful entrepreneur. Probably this means I have to redefine those terms. So  dont  know exactly what success looks like. (and, maybe it looks like the picture up top my son playing in the window of my bankers office.) But somehow, last year, I earned six figures coaching people about how to have a successful career. I think I did it by being a good sounding board for other people, and the reason I can be that is because you are all together such an amazing sounding board for me. The conversation on this blog about defining career success and stay-at-home parenting, and about all the pile of lies we feed each otherthat conversation is more difficult and more stimulating than any Ive had in my life. Obviously, pregnant women are recommended to have as little caffeine as possible as it can travel through the placenta into the baby’s bloodstream.There are three types of people when it comes to caffeine:Hypersensitive: if you take a sip of coffee, you’ll lose an entire night’s sleep and feel jittery! This is rare, but you’ll know if this is you.Normal sensitivity: you can safely consume 200-400 mg of caffein e in a day without any ill effects. This is the average window of safe caffeine consumption, and most people fall into this category.Hyposensitivity: you can drink more than 500 mg of caffeine without any overdose symptoms, and can sleep well even if you have a cup right before bed. I once had a shot of espresso from an airport cafe just to stay awake on an upcoming flight and ended up falling asleep within minutes of boarding!Caffeine in coffeeHere’s a quick rundown of the average amounts of caffeine in coffee.Espresso: about 100mg per 2 ounce shotRegular coffee: 150-200mg per 8 ounce cupCappuccino/latte/macchiato: the same as an espresso, unless you have a double shotThese values are averages and will obviously depend on the kind of bean used. Per volume of coffee, lighter roasts tend to have more caffeine. Robusta beansI’d like to point out here that a cupis in fact a US cup, or 8 ounces. If you drink 12 ounces of coffee in one go, that’s the same thing as 1.5 c ups, so if you had 3 12 ounce servings of coffee, you’re effectively having 4.5 cups of coffee.At this point, you’ll definitely go over the safe caffeine limit for most people, and if you add cream and sugar, you’ll also be consuming a lot of unnecessary calories.Many coffee establishments serve specialty drinks that are guilty of this very thing. They’ll serve you a giant cup of coffee that’s loaded with caffeine, sugar, fat, and artificial sweeteners. Whats one of the top factors hiring managers give when rejecting candidates and one of the top reasons employees give for quitting? Not the right cultural fit. In fact, 44% of employees say they want a good work culture over salary when considering a position according to CareerBuilder. Furthermore, 1/5 of workers said a toxic work culture forced workers to leave a job, according to a SHRM study. But what exactly is cultural fit and how do you evaluate it? What Does Company Culture Mean? Company culture is the personality of the company. But it can be difficult to describe an organization’s personality. You can also think of company culture as meaning how things get done. The problem is, we don’t yet have any universal terminology or definitions to describe workplace culture which makes it difficult to people to describe or even define. One way of doing this is to list the components that influence or impact a companys personality. These vary widely and can include: job satisfaction employee engagement work-life balance opportunities for collaboration and growth effective leadership benefits organizational trust co-worker relationships meaningful work empowerment feedback recognition growth Let’s agree, asking someone to describe their companys culture isn’t very helpful. Online Customer Reviews Whether it’s a product page on the company’s website or Amazon, read customer reviews. See what customers are saying in the reviews. Are they satisfied? What complaints do they have? How has the company publicly addressed complaints? Another source of reviews is Yelp. Though we mostly know it for restaurant reviews, Yelp also has business reviews. 5. Quora Known as a site for asking and answering questions, Quora may have the answer to “what is it like to work at X company?” You may not be comfortable posting a question yourself, but you can search the site to see if anyone else has asked your question before and read the responses instead. (In order to see all the responses, you will need to register, but there is no cost.) 6. Company LinkedIn Pages Company pages on LinkedIn can feature lots of data. Youll find a listing of all employees who work there and who you are connected with. Some companies include employee career paths and videos. Not every organization has completed all the information on their page but do take a look to see what you discover. 7. Ask Everyone You Know A company’s work culture, good or bad, spreads outside the four walls of the building. Ask everyone you know what they know about the company and what it’s like to work there. If the company has a bad reputation, you want to know this information before you accept the offer, not after. 8. News About The Company Read local and national news about the company. Look for news about changes to the organization’s structure and leadership as it has a direct impact on the culture, for example, news of a recent merger, downsizing or new leadership.
